Cmdlets are usually implemented around resource operations. The four basic operations are CREATE, READ, UPDATE and DELETE. This set of operations is known as CRUD. Most of the cmdlets support CRUD which are respectively cmdlets that start with the New/Get/Set/Remove cmdlet verbs but they also may have additional operations

Step 1: Retrieve a object by running a Get command

You can READ objects by using Get-Patch cmdlet. See example below:

# Retrieves the critical esx 4.0.* patches released after 10.11.2007, that contain "ESX40-MMODE" in their properties.

Get-Patch -SearchPhrase "ESX40-MMODE" -Severity critical -Product "esx 4.0.*" -After 10.11.2007

Step 2 : Run commands from the CRUD group

You can CREATE objects by using New-PatchBaseline cmdlet. See example below:

# Creates a new patch baseline named "Baseline" that includes patches with the specified parameters.

$patch = Get-Patch -SearchPhrase "nexus" -Severity critical -Product "embeddedESX 4.0.0" -After 10.11.2009 New-PatchBaseline -Name Baseline -IncludePatch $patch -TargetType Host
You can UPDATE objects by using Copy-Patch cmdlet. See example below:

# Stages all patches included in baselines attached to the entity named Host.

Copy-Patch -Entity Host

Step 3: Explore More Related Commands:

Get-PatchBaseline This cmdlet retrieves patch baselines.
Set-PatchBaseline This cmdlet modifies the properties of a patch baseline.
Sync-Patch This cmdlet downloads new patches into the Update Manager repository.
